The Invisible Black Backdrop for doll pictures

DOLL PHOTOGRAPHY

Today I wanted to share some of my latest doll pictures using Invisible Black Backdrop technique which has been described over here.

If you want to achieve something like this you will just need a camera with manual mode on and some source of light such as desk lamp. I am not a professional photographer to use some fancy Speedlight flash and reflecting umbrella but the good thing is we don't really need these for doll photography. Let me show you how I did it.

All you need is just to put a lamp directly into the doll's face and then just play with your camera's ISO, shutter speed and Aperture. (All the pictures you see in this post has been taken during the day with a great natural light in the room.)

On this photo, you can see where is the lamp.

After taking more than 100 photos and analyzing the results I can say that the following parameters worked the best for me:

  • ISO - 100 or 200
  • Shutter Speed - somewhere between 1/125th and 1/160th of a second
  • Aperture - f/5.0 - f/6.3
I added some Photoshop magic at the end but just tiny bit. If you can get photos like the one below, they can be turned into a really good pictures after correcting "Blacks" in Photoshop.

After increased "Blacks" from 3 to 18

I think this is a very interesting technique which can give some beautiful dramatic look to a doll. I changed some of the photos to Black and White while left the others in colour. Love both! What do you think?

Have fun!

Cheers,
Olga
